Irving Reed letter, 1879.

Irving Reed traveled up the Missouri River on the steamboat Dakota in 1879 as a member of a military construction party detailed to build Fort Assiniboine, in Montana Territory. This collection consists of a letter (June 28, 1879) written to the editor of the White Pigeon Journal describing the party's trip up the river, the surrounding country, and their arrival at the site of the fort. Irving McKenny Reed (1889-1968), both a highway engineer and a mining engineer, did field work throughout Alaska. He was also municipal project engineer in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he served as city councilman for eight years. Reed was Alaska's first fire warden and held the office of Territorial Game Commissioner for twelve years. He made the first report on the discovery of platinum at Goodnews Bay for the Alaska Territorial Department of Mines,and helped to develop production there. ...
